The Swahilian Coastal Forests are located along the eastern Africa coast, from southern Somalia to southern Mozambique. These isolated patches of forest are usually found within 100 km from the sea. Human activity has massively reduced their original extent, and the forests now survive as a series of isolated fragments. They contain many rare species of plants and animals.

The Swahilian / Eastern African Coastal Forests form the most important habitat within Conservation International's 'Coastal Forests of Eastern Africa hotspot', and are therefore recognised to be one of the 25 most important terrestrial habitats on the planet. For more information go to this link.

A selection of reports and older scientific articles about these forests is available on this site, together with links to other relevant sites.
